floodways
Diversion water routes
Floodways are channels designed to divert excess water during floods, protecting populated areas by directing overflow away from them.
Natural floodways follow low-lying terrain; engineered ones are constructed as part of flood control systems.
The floodway carried runoff safely past the city.
The term also applies to areas designated for controlled flooding.
