first grade

Elementary school's beginning

First grade is the year of schooling that typically follows kindergarten, when children are around six or seven years old.

In the United States, it marks the beginning of formal elementary education, where children learn foundational reading, writing, and arithmetic: My daughter just started first grade.

The term can describe the grade level itself or function as an adjective: first-grade teacher, first-grade reading level.
