sight words
Recognized without decoding
Sight words are common words that beginning readers are taught to recognize instantly by shape rather than sounding out letter by letter.
Words like *the*, *said*, *was*, and *of* appear so frequently that memorizing them speeds reading fluency.
Many sight words have irregular spellings that make phonetic decoding difficult anyway: She's learning her sight words this week.
