fireboard

Fireplace opening screen

A fireboard is a board or panel placed in front of a fireplace opening when not in use, blocking drafts and preventing debris from entering the room.

Historically, fireboards were often decorated with painted scenes or designs, serving both functional and ornamental purposes: The summer fireboard featured a painted urn of flowers.
