open hearth
Exposed smelting chamber
Open hearth refers to a steelmaking process using a shallow, basin-shaped furnace where flames play directly over molten metal.
The method dominated steel production through most of the twentieth century before being largely replaced by more efficient processes.
The term also describes the furnace itself: The open hearth could hold hundreds of tons of molten steel.
