fireboards

Fireboards are decorative panels placed in front of a fireplace opening when the fireplace is not in use, typically during warm months.

They serve both practical and aesthetic purposes—blocking drafts, keeping out debris, and filling the dark void of an empty hearth.

Historical fireboards often featured painted scenes, landscapes, or floral arrangements.

She replaced the fireboard with a fresh arrangement of dried flowers for summer.
