fire break

Flame-halting gap

A fire break is a gap in vegetation or other combustible material that stops or slows the spread of fire.

Fire breaks may be natural features like rivers or rocky outcrops, or deliberately created strips of cleared land: Crews cut a fire break around the perimeter of the blaze.

Also spelled as one word: firebreak.
