film grain
Analog image noise
Film grain is the visible texture in photographs or motion pictures caused by the random distribution of light-sensitive particles in film emulsion.
The effect varies with film stock and exposure—faster films show coarser grain.
Digital photography eliminated grain, but filmmakers and photographers often add it back for aesthetic warmth or period authenticity: The director wanted film grain to give it that seventies look.
