madame

House of ill-repute proprietor

Madame is a formal title of respect for a woman, equivalent to the English Mrs. or ma'am.

It comes from French and appears most often in English when addressing or referring to women in French-speaking contexts, or in formal diplomatic and business settings.

In historical and literary usage, a madame may also be the woman who runs a brothel.

The plural is mesdames, though this form is rare in English.
