eye for an eye
Tit for tat
An eye for an eye is a principle of retributive justice: punishment should match the offense in kind and degree.
From the biblical code in Exodus, it originally limited vengeance—no more than an eye for an eye.
Now it often justifies retaliation: They believe in an eye for an eye.
The fuller phrase is "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth."
