special case

Unusual situation warranting distinction

A special case is an instance that doesn't follow the general rule—an exception requiring different treatment or consideration.

In logic and mathematics, a special case is a specific example of a broader principle: The equation simplifies in the special case where x equals zero.

More loosely, calling something a special case can suggest it deserves unusual accommodation: He thinks he's a special case and the rules don't apply to him.
