ester bond
Condensation reaction product
An ester bond is a chemical linkage formed when an acid reacts with an alcohol, releasing water.
These bonds connect fatty acids to glycerol in fats and oils, and link nucleotides in DNA and RNA backbones.
The reaction that forms them is esterification; the reaction that breaks them is hydrolysis.
Soap-making hydrolyzes the ester bonds in animal fat.
