acyl group

Acid minus hydroxyl

An acyl group is a molecular fragment formed when a hydroxyl group is removed from a carboxylic acid, leaving a carbon double-bonded to oxygen and single-bonded to another atom or group.

Acyl groups appear throughout organic chemistry—in esters, amides, and the acetyl groups that regulate gene expression.

The acyl group transfers to the enzyme's active site.
