end-organ
Final tissue target
An end-organ is the structure at the terminus of a nerve fiber where sensory or motor function occurs—a receptor that detects stimuli or an effector that carries out responses.
In medicine, end-organ often appears in end-organ damage, referring to harm sustained by vital organs (heart, kidneys, brain, eyes) as the ultimate targets of systemic disease like hypertension or diabetes.
