emergency stairs

Evacuation descent route

Emergency stairs are stairways designated for evacuation during fires, power outages, or other crises when elevators become unsafe or unavailable.

Most buildings require them by code, and they're typically enclosed in fire-resistant stairwells with clearly marked exits: We took the emergency stairs when the fire alarm went off.

Also called emergency stairwell or fire stairs.
