electronic organ

Plugged-in church instrument

An electronic organ is a keyboard instrument that generates sound electrically rather than through pipes or reeds.

Developed in the early twentieth century as a cheaper, more portable alternative to pipe organs, electronic organs became fixtures in churches, skating rinks, and home recreation rooms.

Hammond organs and similar instruments shaped the sound of jazz, gospel, and rock music.
