dynamic positioning
Thruster-maintained vessel position
Dynamic positioning is a computerized system that automatically maintains a vessel's position and heading using its own propellers and thrusters, without anchors.
Used primarily on offshore drilling rigs, cable-laying ships, and research vessels where anchoring is impractical or impossible: The ship held station in 3,000 feet of water using dynamic positioning.
GPS, motion sensors, and wind gauges feed data to computers that make continuous adjustments.
