tidal effects
Moon-driven ocean changes
Tidal effects are the distortions caused when gravity pulls more strongly on one side of an object than the other.
The moon's gravity tugs harder on the near side of Earth than the far side, stretching the oceans into bulges that create tides.
The same principle operates throughout the cosmos—tidal effects can tear apart stars that wander too close to black holes, or gradually slow a planet's rotation over millions of years.
