terrestrial planets

Inner solar system

Terrestrial planets are the rocky, Earth-like planets of the inner solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.

They have solid surfaces, relatively thin atmospheres, and few or no moons—distinguishing them from the gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) farther from the sun.

The term extends to similar rocky planets discovered around other stars.
