dry wash

Seasonal riverbed, waterless

A dry wash is a streambed that carries water only during rainstorms, common in arid regions of the American Southwest.

Most of the year it's a sandy or gravelly channel, dry and crossable: We hiked along the dry wash looking for petroglyphs.

Also called an arroyo or wash.

Separately, dry wash means cleaning fabric without water, using chemical solvents—essentially dry cleaning.
