protocol droid
Robotic etiquette assistant
A protocol droid is a humanoid robot designed for etiquette, translation, and diplomatic communication—the kind of android you'd send to negotiate or interpret at formal functions.
The term comes from the Star Wars franchise, where C-3PO is the iconic example: fluent in millions of languages, anxious about proper behavior, and largely useless in a fight.
Outside Star Wars contexts, protocol droid sometimes describes a person overly focused on rules and formalities: Don't be such a protocol droid—just ask her out.
