steering rack
Rotational-to-linear mechanism
A steering rack is the toothed bar in a rack-and-pinion steering system that converts the rotational motion of the steering wheel into the lateral movement that turns a vehicle's wheels.
When the pinion gear attached to the steering column rotates, it moves the rack side to side, pushing and pulling tie rods connected to the wheels: The mechanic said the steering rack was leaking fluid and needed replacement.
