driftnets
Ocean curtain catchers
Driftnets are large fishing nets that hang vertically in the water, suspended by floats at the top and weights at the bottom, and drift with currents to catch fish by their gills.
They can extend for miles and are controversial for catching unintended species—dolphins, sea turtles, sharks—leading to international restrictions on their use.
The fishing industry fought driftnet bans for years.
