driftnet
Current-carried catcher
A driftnet is a large fishing net that hangs vertically in the water, suspended by floats at the top and weights at the bottom, drifting with currents to trap fish by their gills.
Driftnets can stretch for miles and catch everything in their path, earning criticism for killing dolphins, sea turtles, and other unintended species.
Many countries have banned or restricted their use: The UN imposed a moratorium on high-seas driftnet fishing.
