draglines

Giant bucket machines

Draglines are trailing silk threads that spiders produce as they move, serving as safety lines and navigation aids.

In mining and excavation, a dragline is a type of crane with a bucket suspended from a boom, dragged along the ground to scoop material: The dragline stripped away overburden to reach the coal seam.

The machinery takes its name from the dragging motion of the bucket.
