power shovels

Motorized earth movers

Power shovels are large excavating machines with a hinged bucket at the end of a boom, used for digging and moving earth, rock, or other heavy materials.

They dominated construction and mining through most of the 20th century before hydraulic excavators largely replaced them.

The term now often applies broadly to any heavy digging equipment: Power shovels carved out the foundation in two days.
