trenchers

Medieval serving boards

Trenchers are flat pieces of wood or stale bread used as plates in medieval dining.

Diners would eat food placed on the trencher, then discard or give away the bread afterward.

The word survives mainly in historical contexts and in trencherman—someone with a hearty appetite, one who clears their trencher.

A trencher is also a tool for digging trenches.
