dock lines
Vessel securing ropes
Dock lines are ropes used to secure a boat or ship to a dock, pier, or mooring.
Different lines serve different purposes: bow lines and stern lines prevent fore-and-aft movement, while spring lines run at angles to prevent the vessel from surging forward or backward with waves or current.
Make sure your dock lines are properly cleated before leaving the boat.
The term is standard in recreational boating; commercial vessels more often use mooring lines.
