capstans
Rotating nautical drums
Capstans are rotating drums or cylinders used to wind rope, cable, or tape.
On ships, a capstan is a vertical winch for hauling anchor chains or mooring lines, traditionally turned by sailors pushing horizontal bars.
The mechanism appears in tape recorders and other machines where material must be pulled at steady tension: The capstan controls tape speed.
