discourses

Formal spoken exchanges

Discourses are extended discussions or treatments of a subject, whether spoken or written.

The word often appears in academic contexts for formal treatises or lectures: Descartes' Discourse on Method.

In linguistics and philosophy, discourse refers to language in use—how ideas are expressed and communicated within particular communities or traditions: political discourse, medical discourse.

The verb discourse means to speak or write at length: He discoursed on the virtues of patience.
