directional pad

Four-way input buttons

A directional pad is the cross-shaped control on a video game controller, pressed with the thumb to indicate direction—up, down, left, right, and sometimes diagonals.

Often shortened to D-pad.

Though largely superseded by analog sticks for movement, the directional pad remains standard for navigating menus and precise inputs: Use the D-pad to scroll through your inventory.
