traprock
Dark volcanic stone
Traprock is dark, fine-grained igneous rock—especially basalt or diabase—used as crushed stone for road construction, railroad ballast, and concrete aggregate.
The term comes from a Swedish word for stair, referring to the step-like formations these rocks often create when they weather.
The quarry supplies traprock for highway projects throughout the region.
