depressor
Something pushing down
A depressor is something that pushes down.
In anatomy, a depressor muscle lowers a body part: the depressor of the lower lip pulls it downward.
Medical instruments called depressors hold tissue out of the way during examination—a tongue depressor is the familiar flat wooden stick pressed on the tongue to view the throat.
In pharmacology, a depressor is an agent that reduces functional activity: a cardiac depressor slows the heart.
