freezing point depression
Antifreeze's operating principle
Freezing point depression is the lowering of a liquid's freezing temperature when a substance dissolves in it.
Salt on icy roads works this way—the saltwater mixture freezes at a lower temperature than pure water.
The more solute dissolved, the greater the depression.
Antifreeze in car radiators exploits the same principle.
