levator
Muscle that elevates
A levator is a muscle that raises a body part.
The term appears in anatomical names: the levator scapulae raises the shoulder blade, the levator palpebrae superioris raises the upper eyelid.
In surgery, a levator is an instrument used to lift depressed bone fragments.
The word contrasts with depressor, which lowers.
