default value
Preset starting point
A default value is what a system uses when no alternative is specified.
Software settings have defaults that apply until users change them: The default value for the timeout is 30 seconds.
Forms may pre-fill fields with default values.
The concept extends beyond computing—any assumed starting point when nothing else is chosen.
