datagrams
Self-contained data units
Datagrams are self-contained units of data transmitted across a network, each carrying enough information to be routed independently to its destination.
Unlike connection-based protocols that establish a dedicated channel, datagrams travel separately and may arrive out of order or not at all: UDP sends datagrams without guaranteeing delivery.
The term emphasizes the packet's independence—each datagram is complete in itself.
