darters
Small perch relatives
Darters are small freshwater fish native to North America, named for their quick, darting movements along stream bottoms.
The term also applies to long-necked water birds, also called anhingas or snakebirds, that spear fish with their sharp bills and swim with only their necks visible above water.
More generally, anything that darts—moves with sudden speed—might be called a darter.
