bullheads

Whiskered bottom feeders

Bullheads are freshwater catfish native to North America, smaller than their channel catfish relatives and recognized by their broad, flat heads and sharp spines.

They thrive in murky, slow-moving waters where other fish struggle: We caught a dozen bullheads in the pond behind the barn.

The name also applies to various other fish with large heads, and informally to stubborn people—though bullheaded is more common for that sense.
