damsons

Tart purple fruit

Damsons are small, oval plums with dark blue-purple skin and tart yellow-green flesh.

Too astringent to eat raw, they're prized for jams, jellies, and gin: damson preserves, damson gin.

The fruit takes its name from Damascus, where it supposedly originated.

A damson tree is sometimes called a damson plum.
