sloe
Tart hedgerow drupe
A sloe is the small, dark blue-black fruit of the blackthorn bush, bitter and astringent when raw.
Sloes are best known for flavoring sloe gin, a liqueur made by steeping the berries in gin with sugar.
The word sometimes describes the deep purplish-black color of the fruit: sloe-eyed.
