cyclopedias
Comprehensive reference volumes
Cyclopedias is the plural of cyclopedia, a shortened form of encyclopedia.
Like its longer parent, cyclopedia refers to a comprehensive reference work containing articles on a wide range of subjects or on many aspects of a particular field.
The term was more common in earlier centuries and now appears mostly in the titles of older works or in deliberately archaic contexts.
The family's worn cyclopedias sat untouched on the shelf.
