cybercafés

Public browsing spots

Cybercafés are establishments offering public internet access, typically for an hourly fee.

They emerged in the 1990s as internet access points before home broadband became widespread.

The term combines cyber (relating to computers and networks) with café, as many served coffee alongside terminals: I checked my email at a cybercafé in Bangkok.

Now largely obsolete in developed countries but still common where personal internet access remains limited.
