cut-in

Steal a dance

A cut-in is an abrupt insertion into something already in progress.

In film and television, it's a shot inserted into a scene—often a close-up of hands or an object.

In driving, it's when someone suddenly enters your lane: That cut-in nearly caused an accident.

To cut in is to interrupt a conversation or to tap someone's partner during a dance: May I cut in?
