cuir bouilli
Boiled leather armor
Cuir bouilli is leather that has been soaked, shaped while wet, then hardened by drying or heating.
The French term means "boiled leather," though the process doesn't necessarily involve boiling.
Used historically for armor, cases, and decorative work, the material becomes rigid enough to hold its form: a cuir bouilli scabbard, medieval cuir bouilli breastplates.
