mutes

Dampens the sound

Mutes is the plural of mute—devices that soften or alter the sound of musical instruments: The trumpet player inserted one of his mutes.

Mutes also serves as the verb: someone mutes a television, a phone, or a microphone to silence it.

On social media, to mute is to hide someone's posts without unfollowing them: I muted him during the election.
