counterarguing

Offering opposing points

Counterarguing is the mental process of generating objections or rebuttals while receiving a persuasive message.

When you hear a sales pitch or political speech and find yourself thinking of reasons it's wrong, you're counterarguing: The more she pushed the product, the more I found myself counterarguing.

The term appears frequently in psychology and communication research, where counterarguing is studied as a form of resistance to persuasion.
