counter-proposal
Negotiator's suggested alternative
A counter-proposal is an alternative offer made in response to one you find unacceptable.
In negotiations, rejecting a proposal outright ends discussion; a counter-proposal keeps it alive by suggesting different terms: Management rejected the union's demands but came back with a counter-proposal.
