coronary stent

Heart vessel tube

A coronary stent is a small mesh tube inserted into a coronary artery to hold it open after it has been widened by angioplasty.

The stent acts as scaffolding, preventing the artery from narrowing again and maintaining blood flow to the heart muscle.

Most modern stents are drug-eluting, slowly releasing medication to discourage scar tissue from forming inside the artery.
