DES
Seventies encryption standard
DES stands for Data Encryption Standard, a symmetric-key algorithm that was the dominant encryption method from the 1970s until stronger alternatives emerged.
DES also abbreviates diethylstilbestrol, a synthetic estrogen once prescribed to prevent miscarriage, later found to cause health problems in children exposed in utero: DES daughters face elevated cancer risks.
